1 - Michael Jackson - Thriller - 1983 :- Michael saw the film An american Werewolf in London and from there he got the idea to do a werewolf scene in his video thriller. The song was 15 minutes long. The only time you could see the full video was at midnight during that time. The video needed the biggest make up cal in history, Michael jackson was also the King of pop.



2 - Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer - 1986
3 - A - ha - Take on me - 1985 :- This was a fabulous video, however they were a one hit wonder. They released this song then sank without trace.
4 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 1975 :- This song is about nothing and the lyrics make mo sense.

5 - Madonna - Like a prayer - 1989 - The most controversial video, it cost madonna millions.

6 - Robbie Williams - Rock DJ - 2000
7 - Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - 1983 :- This song launched his career, the video was very powerful to the audience.

She cried in the video, as her mother died a few weeks before she made the video. This made the song very emotional as you can't buy fake tears, those where real tears. This adds value to the song, many people loved it because she cried. Also most of the song was done in a close up shot. The song was also directed by John Maybury.

Copyright is basically someone producing something and then saying its copyrighted, which means that no one else can copy their idea as they had it first.

This is another definition of copyright from Wikipedia: 

"A copyright is a set of exclusive rights granted by a state to the creator of an original work or their assignee for a limited period of time upon disclosure of the work. This includes the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. In most jurisdictions copyright arises upon fixation and does not need to be registered. Copyright owners have the exclusive statutory right to exercise control over copying and other exploitation of the works for a specific period of time, after which the work is said to enter the public domain. Uses covered under limitations and exceptions to copyright, such as fair use, do not require permission from the copyright owner, but all other uses require permission. Copyright owners can license or permanently transfer or assign their exclusive rights to others". 
How does copyright effect me
Copyright effects my video in several ways, firstly i must make sure that any music that i choose t use in the video i have permission for. It is important that i contact the artist to ask if it is okay to use there track. 

Case Study

Jamie Thraves most recent video was called 'Song for lisa' by Japanese popstars. Currently the video cost about £20,000 and the video was shot in 2 days. By jamie making this video this was able to get him into the the film business.

Jamies has aslo shot three features:-

• The low down
• The cry of the owl
• Treacle Jr.

Jamie had given some tips to use when making a music video. He said you should use the lyrics but try not to be too literal. Most importanttly he said go with the emotion of the lyrics.

Jamie Thraves Case Study

Jamie Thraves is a director, he made short films at university. In university he used award winning shorts films as a 'calling card' to get a 'foot in the door' with the video production company factory films. He began by shooting three very short budget music videos which cost about £5,000 each.

This is how the process works:-

• A 'commissoner' from a record label sends a track to 5-10 directors.
• The directors then each submit a treatment.
• This stage is unpaid.
• The director who has submitted the 'best' treatment is then commissioned to make the video.
• Only then is the director paid.
• As can be seen for many directors in the business it is a precarious existence where their livelihood is dependant on each commission. 
• Jamie Thraves submitted treatments for his two best known videos and each was accepted. 

Here are some examples of videos that had low budgets and where shot in a few days:-

• The first video was called 'Just' by Radiohead. The budget for this video was £100,000 and the video was shot in three days.
• The second video was called 'The Scientist' by Coldplay. The budget for this video was £200,000 and it also took three days to shot.

• There has been a massive switch in the way people watch music videos, before they could watch them on TV channels now there is youtube so you can just watch the videos there.
