Audience Theory

There are three theories of audience that we can apply to help us come to a better understanding about the relationship between texts and audience.
  1. The effects model or the hypodermic model.
  2. The uses and gratifications model.
  3. Reception theory
The Effect model
  • The consumption of media texts has an effect or influence upon the audience.
  • It is normally considered that this effect is negative.
  • Audience are passive and powerless to prevent the influence.
  • The power lies with the message of the text.
This model is also called:

The Hypodermic mode
  • Here, the message in media texts are injected into the audeince by the powerful syringe - like media.
  • The audience is powerless to resist.
  • Therefore, the media works like a drug and the audience is druggged, addicted, doped or duped.
Key evidence for the effects model.

  1. The Frankfurt school theorised in the 1920s and 30s that that the mass media acted to restrict and control audiences to the benefit of corporate capitalism and governments.
  2. The Bobo Doll experiment.
  3. This is a very controversial piece of research that apparently proved that children copy violent behaviour.
  • This was conducted in 1961 by Albert Bandura

Problems during editing

One of the problems we had during editing was that one of the band members wore different outfits during two scenes. This was a problem because we had to take parts of out from the video, where he wore another outfit. This meant that we had to film the stage scene again but that members bit, this didn't help us as we had to take the camera out again and film then edit it back into the music video.
This is what the band looked like before.
As you can see in this shot one member is wearing a jumper that he didn't wear before. We decided to cary on filming because we thought it wouldn't be a problem, however it looked very odd when we edited it.

Editing process

Once we filmed all the scenes that we needed, we came back to school and used Final cut express on the Imac computers. As we were editing we decided to get screenshots of the editing process, this is useful because it shows how we edit and what things are included when editing. There are many different tools needed when editing and you can see this by the screenshots below. We also got a screenshot of the timeline to show where we put the images and what effects were used.

Next session - London scene

For our next session, we filmed in different locations in London. We filmed at oxford circus, the london eye and St. James park. To make use of the time we had, we decided to plan our route  and the locations we will be filing at. Firstly we went to oxford circus to film the beginning of the video and a few scenes for  our video, after we then went to St. James park to film the majority of the film. After we then went to the South bank and we used the london eye as a background for another scene of our video. The images below show the photos we took of our filming session.

This is close up of the lead singer singer the chorus at South bank.

The scene at Oxford circus shows each member messing about and just having fun.

The was also a funny scene, one member of the group is calling his friend to see where he is, only to find out that he was on the other side.

This scene is all about the group singing the chorus together, with the London eye as the background.

First film session

Today we filmed for the first time, we decided to film the first verse and chorus of the stage scene. The session was successful because we finished the first verse and chorus, however we had to stop at times to learn the words, this shows how unprepared we were. There are many improvements that need to be made when filming the stage scene again, we need to be more prepared with the lyrics and instruments and know what we are going to do.

Mood Board

This is my mood board for our music video. I decided to do a mood board to show the different moods of our video. I also created this board to show what events will be happening in the video. Each member did there own mood board, this was a good ideas because each person had different ideas. This is good because we could combine our ideas to make one big mood board.

Lyrics for our video - Silent Film Project - Singer/Songwritter

I'm offered forty six of the communicators gifts
I've wasted every drop of ink and every borrowed pencil lead
pretending i have seen something that's not been seen before
in the dusty carpet dirty cups and boot prints on my door
forgive me but i don't know what i'm for or against
I've not read what i'm sending to you all but it's yours

Name me after a Van Gogh spillage
I know where to go in the city
to the places that make heroes of the fools
singing stories of their wasted chances broken rules

I've settled every one of my re-occuring arguments
with a fiction that i lifted from the news and the news you brought
of the punches and the salmon that you caught
whilst living in the real world without me
forgive me but i don't know what i've brought to this party
and i'm drunk on things i wouldn't normally drink and broken hearted
I'm a lucky one it's how Willie Nelson started and perhaps
Paul Simon's gonna harmonise with me someday

Potential Props and Costumes for Music Video

Today we had a group session on ideas for our music video. It was very successful because we had many ideas for this video. The ideas we came up with were very easy, simple, fun and exciting. The location of our video will mostly be in Central london. We also got ideas on where the band will be set

This scooter will be used in our video, as they are fun. We chose this because it brings a lot of energy and excitement.

Central London is where the video will be set for all the fun scenes. We chose Central London because it is the heart of london and there is a lot  of attractive images around London that will help in the making of our video.

As we are a band we will be set on stage, for most of the video will be set on the stage but for the rest of the video it will be in London. We chose a stage because

The main idea for our video is just a group of friends together having fun and being energetic.

For our costumes this is the type of look we are going for, jeans or chinos with a shirt and jacket or jumper and a snapback(hat). We chose these because they are the latest fashion trends and we wanted the band to be up to date with the latest fashion. This is to make us look different from other bands and more unique.

Final Idea Post

Today we had a group meeting and we rounded up all of our final ideas for our music video. We looked at all ideas and made decisions on which ones should be used. We all decided that the video will be a fun and energetic video and will mainly be set in London.

Example of a Digipak and Music Video

The example I have chosen is from a group in North London who done there A2 project music video, they made there digipak and done there video. I must say there video was quality, they used different techniques such as split screen and there camera shots were amazing. There digipak makes them look like a real girl band.

They also got a clip from there video onto there digipak. The image of the high heels was on there video, so they put it on there digipak to create a link.

Talking about digipak

Today we talked about our digipak, we saw different digipak's from many artist. We had to research and plan ideas for our digipak. We decided to look at some artist digipak.

One artist we looked at was Albert Hammond Jr - Yours to keep. This is the CD inlay cover of his digipak. We then listened to the song and we had to decide if the cover matches the song. The song matches the cover because the song is calm and the cover looks calm with the beavers and rabbits. Also the style of the writing is handwritten.

This is the CD inside cover of the track. The song also matches this scene because it is sunset and it is usually quiet and peaceful during that time.

This is the CD. As you can see there are three rabbits at the front, this is the same as the inlay cover and for the inside cover there are three guys. This is similar 3 guys and 3 rabbits.

Focus Group - How the findings informed my video ideas

From the focus group we fund out a lot of things that people would like to see in our Music video. We found out that the song makes you feel energetic and it makes you tap your feet because of the beat of the song. Also the song is fun, light hearted and you can dance to it because it has a steady beat. From the focus group we also found out that the song gives you ideas about a boy and girl together or not together. We also found out that the song should be filmed on a sunny day as it makes you feel happy and excited.

So in our video we are going to have scenes were we are having fun as a group, we are also going to have scenes of the main singer being with a female and just being happy together. We are also going to make sure that the video is filmed when it is sunny as it brings a fun vibe to everyone.

New email

Since we changed our song we had to email the new artist and ask for there permission if we could use there song. We also asked for the lyrics. We were pleased when they sent an email quickly back because the previous artist didn't send one back.

Focus Group

For our target audience research we decided to do a focus group. We played the song to different people then we asked them questions about the song. The questions we asked were :-

  1. How does this song make you feel?
  2. What ideas do you get from this song?
  3. How often do you go on music channels?
  4. What is your favourite song?
  5. Name a band that is similar to the band we have chosen?
We asked these five questions to 4 different people. We also asked these questions to someone off camera as they were a bit shy.
1. When we asked the first question they said that the song makes them tap there feet and it is upbeat. They also said it makes them feel energetic, fun, light hearted and also cherry. They also said you could dance it because it has a steady beat.
2. We asked the second question and they said the ideas they get is of a boy and girl together or not together. Another idea they got is of the song being outside on a sunny day and a couple being happy and silly together.
3. For the third question they said they very rarely if it all go on music channels.
4. There favourite song is Life on mars by David Bowie.
5. The band that they remind them off is the smiths and the bank the kooks.

The Decision!

Today we had a group meeting, we were going to plan our video however we couldn't think of any ideas. We couldn't think of a location or how the video will look in general. So overall we all decided to change our music video song.

The song we have chosen is signer/songwriter by Silent film project. We chose this song because it gave us ideas instantly and is is also a cheerful and fun song.

A2 Preliminary Task

This is our A2 Preliminary Task Music video.

Firstly our teacher put it on the computers so that it would be easier for use to get it. We then blue toothed it from the computer to my mobile phone. Once it was on the computer it was more easier when editing because we wouldn't have to send it back to the computer.

This is the editing process of our music video, we done this on final cut express.

When we started editing firstly we put the song on the timeline then we put in the clips of where the actors were singing at the same time with the actual song. We done it first time and from there we started to edit the video and make it more interesting. The zig zag lines on the timeline are overlays which means we can change the images on the screens, we can fade out in one image so that another person shows up.
I learnt how to layer the editing and make different clips match and fade in or out. Our video was very successful because we didn't have any problems when editing or filming. Also our video was successful because we knew each other in our group so it was much easier when working together.

Got your music? What next?

This is the email we sent to the artist.

This is what we sent :-

Can we please use your song Photoshoot from unsigned.com as we think it is very suitable and very interesting song. Is it possible if you could send us an MP3 format and the lyrics to the song. Once we have finished our video we would happily send you the finished project to see if you like it.

Thank you
A2 Media students - Myles, Rilwan, Mohammed and Billy

Before we chose the song we had to ask for permission, so that is why we set this email. We also asked for a copy of the song in mp3 format and the lyrics to the song.

This is the audio clip of the song we have chose. We chose this because it is interesting, exciting and it reaches out to people our age.
